Environmental Issues

Environmental factors affect us all.  Particulate matter in our air, limited and polluted water supplies, and current and future droughts all have a negative impact on children, health, relieving poverty, and the general well being of all Alabama residents.  Each of us can help each other by respecting what God has given us and protecting our Earth for the future.

Monthly Conservation Tips:

8/10— During hot weather, don’t top off your gas tank.  Refuel your car or truck in the early morning or the evening when it’s cooler.  A small fuel spill may not seem like much, but every spill evaporates and adds to air pollution, and fuel pumps with vapor recovery systems can feed a spill back into their tanks—after you paid for it.  So, in hot weather—don’t top off!

8/09 — Read labels: know where your food comes from and what’s in it.

3/09 — THINK before you act: consider the environmental consequences.

2/09 — Turn down the thermostat and bundle up.

1/09 - Stop delivery of unnecessary catalogs; go to catalogchoice.org to opt out.

12/08 - Be thoughtful as you are doing your holiday shopping.  Pay attention to how much is really needed, how much packaging, maybe wrap your gifts in newspaper comics instead of gift wrap.  Check out the Greening Your Holidays (interfaith) and Greening Christmas tip sheets.

11/08 - Safely discard/recycle electronic equipment.  Check your local news for e-cycling events in your area.

10/08 - Unplug chargers for cell phones, PDAs, laptops, etc. when not in use.

9/08 - Donate, don’t discard.

8/08 - Buy local.

7/08 – Recycle.  If your town does not support recycling, ask for it.  Go to the local recycling center.

6/08 – Bring reusable shopping bags to the markets.

5/08 – Buy a more fuel efficient vehicle and/or Drive Smart.  Consolidate errands into one trip.

4/08 – Don’t idle your car.  10 seconds idling is equivalent to the gas used to restart your car.  Idling pollutes the air and wastes gas.

3/08 – Keep conserving water.  We are still in a drought despite the rain.

2/08 – Run washing machines and dishwashers with full loads.

12/07 - Catch rain from downspouts, put buckets into your showers and sinks.  is water can then be used to water flowers and trees.  Note:  Non soapy water should be used for  anything being consumed, i.e. fruits, vegetables.

11/07 – Don’t let water run while brushing your teeth.
